WNA Fall APRN Clinical Practice Update: Essential Skills for Everyday Practice

WNA Fall Learning Symposium & Membership Assembly 2016

Traditionally offered only in the spring as part of the WNA APRN Forum Pharmacology & Clinical Update, we have added a ‘skills’ workshop to our fall educational offerings.  The program will offer a 2.5-hour session on basic suturing (with lots of built in practice time) and a 1.5-hour session on orthopedic assessment (dress comfortably!).  Learn something new or brush up on your skills … all advance practice nurses and physician assistants are welcome – including students currently enrolled in DNP or PA programs.

7:45 REGISTRATION and continental breakfast
8:15 An Introduction to Primary Wound Closure, Principles and Practice  HANDOUT A review of the principles of primary wound closure and practical experience performing simple wound closure using a pig skin model.  Includes review of application of local anesthetic and digit blocks, common pitfalls in acute wound management and strategies to avoid them, demonstration/practice of 5 wound closure and knot tying techniques.
10:45 BREAK
11:00 Orthopedic Assessment of Common Complaints in Primary or Inpatient Care  HANDOUT Review of shoulder, hip and knee physical exam, evaluation and diagnostics for clinic or inpatient practice.  Evaluating patients for common pain or injury complaints is all too common in daily and weekly practices.  Having a great understanding of our physical exam findings can help us with our differential list and further workup, evaluation or referral if needed.  Treatment options (including pharmacolologic) will be presented for select shoulder, hip and knee conditions.  Dress comfortably as we will practice examination techniques on each other.
12:30 CLOSE OF WORKSHOP – exchange completed evaluation for CNE Certificate
