At their 5/19/09 meeting, the Commission also decided that contact hours for renewal of ACLS, PALS, and other advanced canned courses may not be awarded. Any courses currently being offered must cease to award contact hours by June 1, 2011. Note that awarding contact hours for initial ACLS, PALS, and other advanced canned courses is still permitted.

7/31/10 -- REMINDER: Effective July 31, 2010, organizations that meet the definition of "commercial interest" are not eligible to apply for approval of an educational activity or approved provider status. Further, any current activity or provider approval granted to a commercial interest is terminated as of today. This is a result of changes in the ANCC COA criteria (see 2009 ANCC Application Manual Accreditation Program). A commercial interest is "any entity either producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing healthcare goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients or an entity that is owned or controlled by an entity that produces, markets, re-sells, or distributes healthcare goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients."
3/18/10 -- A reminder that the implementation date for the new criteria is April 1, 2010; therefore, 1. Any organization offering an educational activity on April 1, 2010 or later, must use the 2009 activity application to apply for contact hours. 2. Approved providers are expected to have implemented the new criteria (updated forms, guidelines, policies, etc.) by April 1, 2010. Please contact Megan at the WNA office with questions (608-221-0383, ext.14; 800-362-3959, ext. 14; or megan@wisconsinnurses.org).

12/1/09 -- Also sent electronically on 12/1/09 to all WNA CEAP providers and applicants:
We have had questions regarding the WNA CEAP requirement regarding "Disclosures provided to activity participants" which states that: "Participants shall receive the following information in writing in advance of, or at the time of, the educational activity: (a) Notice of requirements for successful completion; (b) Conflict of interest; (c) Disclosure of relevant financial relationships and mechanism to identify and resolve conflicts of interest; (d) Sponsorship or commercial support; (e) Non-endorsement of products; (f) Off-label use; (g) Expiration date for awarding contact hours (for enduring materials)."
The intent of this requirement is that prospective participants can make informed decisions about whether to participate in the educational activity and whether it is expected to be educationally and scientifically sound and unbiased. Therefore they need to have the information prior to the beginning of the educational activity.
For web-based activities, speaker and planner conflicts of interest, or the fact that there are none, as well as other required disclosures listed above, must be indicated in writing in an introductory slide or screen that all participants will see before they engage in the content of the on-line program.
For live educational activities, speaker and planner conflicts of interest, or the fact that there are none, and other disclosures listed above, must be indicated in writing in an introductory slide or other type of written material (e.g., a handout in participant materials, a poster at the registration table) that all participants will see before they engage in the educational activity.
For both types of educational activities, the provider/applicant will need to submit to WNA CEAP with the application for approval, a hard copy of the disclosure statement, in the format you use (e.g., copies of the introductory slide, the page from the participant packet, a draft of the disclosure poster). This material must also be kept in the educational activity file. Confirmation of disclosures must also be assessed on the activity evaluation form and the summary of the participant responses kept in the activity file and provided to WNA CEAP as requested.
11/4/09 -- From ANCC: In May 2009, the COA decided that contact hours may not be awarded for BLS and other basic "canned" courses after June 1, 2011. In addition contact hours for renewal of ACLS, PALS, and other advanced courses may not be awarded after June 1, 2011. Contact hours may still be awarded for initial ACLS, PALS and other advanced "canned" courses.
11/2/09 -- A reminder that the implementation date for the new criteria is April 1, 2010. Any organization offering an educational activity on April 1, 2010 or later, must use the 2009 activity application. Approved providers are expected to have implemented the new criteria (updated forms, guidelines, policies, etc.) by April 1, 2010. Any new providers applying for provider status after January 1, 2010 should also use the 2009 provider application.
