Current Priorities arrow_red.png WNA Develops Public Policy Priorities for the Legislative Biennium

WNA’s Public Policy Agenda for this legislative biennium is based on two of its goals:

Goal One - WNA will collectively and collaboratively advocate for access to comprehensive quality health care services for all people.

Goal Two - WNA will assure that the registered nurse is an essential provider in all practice settings through education, research, workforce advocacy, legislation, and regulation. WNA will promote the nursing profession and the full utilization of registered nurse services.

WNA’s priorities for the 2009-2010 Legislative Biennium are as follows:

Promote, Protect and Advance the Profession of Nursing through: 

  • Safe nurse staffing legislation for acute care using the ANA Principles for Nurse Staffing.
  • Legislation that decriminalizes nurses and other health care professionals for unintentional medical  errors.
  • Nursing workforce data collection that will take place January 2010 as part of RN license renewal.
  • Public and private funding of the Wisconsin Center for Nursing.
  • Removal of physician supervision language from Patient Compensation Fund statutes.
  • Increase loan forgiveness dollars for all levels of nursing education.
  • Banning Mandatory Overtime.

Advocate for access to comprehensive quality health care services for all people through:

  • Health care and system reform legislation that supports

    • Health promotion and disease prevention,

    • Consumer health literacy,

    • Patient safety; and 

    • Coordinated disease management

  • Fund Public Health

  • Environmental Health

    • Ban fertilizers containing phosphorus
