FEATURED SPEAKERS
Suzanne Miyamoto, PhD, RN, FAAN – Chief Executive Officer, American Academy of Nursing
Prior to her position at the AAN, Dr. Miyamoto served as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) Chief Policy Officer, supporting the membership as a policy analyst, advocate, and strategist at the federal level. She simultaneously led the Nursing Community Coalition— the largest national nursing coalition focused on inserting the voice of the profession in health policy discussions— from 2008-2018. During this time, Dr. Miyamoto worked on such critical legislation as the Higher Education Reauthorization Act in 2008, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009, the Affordable Care Act in 2010, and most recently the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act in 2018.
Karen A. Daley, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN – Nurse Consultant
Dr. Daley served from 2010 to 2014 as president of the American Nurses Association. She practiced for more than 22 years as an emergency department nurse until January of 1999 when she left due to a needlestick injury that resulted in her infection with both HIV and hepatitis C. Since that time, she has been actively engaged on state, national and international levels as an advocate for use of safer needle devices in health care practice settings. In recognition of the integral role she played in the passage of federal legislation to update the 1991 OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Daley was among those invited to the Oval Office to witness President Clinton sign the “Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act” into law on November 6, 2000.
