This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Valencia Reyes, a passionate and driven nurse who recently joined the Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA). Though new to WNA, Valencia brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to patient care, making a positive impact on her patients and community every day.
What Inspired Her Career in Nursing
Valencia pursued nursing with a deep-rooted passion for serving others. She finds her greatest joy in knowing that she makes a difference in the lives of patients, families, communities, and her fellow healthcare professionals.
A Memorable Experience
Throughout her career, Valencia has had many memorable moments, but a recent experience highlighted the importance of truly listening to patients. She recalls assessing a patient who had been experiencing abdominal pain. Recognizing that something was amiss, Valencia advocated for further testing, leading to the discovery of a ruptured vessel. Her quick response allowed for life-saving intervention, and the patient eventually made a full recovery. “No matter what, always take time to listen to the patient,” she advises.
What She Loves About WNA
Since joining WNA just a few months ago, Valencia has found valuable support through mentorship. Meeting with her WNA mentor has given her insight and guidance on reaching her professional goals, and she encourages all members to connect with mentors and tap into WNA’s resources.
Advice for New Nurses
Valencia encourages new nurses to always understand the “why” behind their actions. She believes in quality over quantity and emphasizes the importance of asking questions—no matter how small—to provide the best care possible.
Valencia Outside of Work
To unwind, Valencia loves cooking and trying new recipes, embracing her “foodie at heart” spirit. She also finds comfort in reading. On her days off, you’ll likely find her catching up on sleep and relaxing, recharging for her work ahead. Her go-to comfort food? Pasta with plenty of sauce!
Goals and Aspirations
Through her nursing career, Valencia hopes to support health promotion initiatives that benefit low-income and underserved communities. She’s dedicated to fostering positive health outcomes and believes in the power of WNA to drive meaningful change in Wisconsin
